(Alexandria, Va.) — The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), the trade association representing the swimming pool, hot tub, and spa industry, is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Chair and four new Voting Members to the PHTA Standards Consensus Committee (SCC). The SCC is PHTA’s official consensus voting body, responsible for reviewing and voting on all pool, spa, and hot tub standards to be approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Members of the SCC are classified into one of four interest categories: Producer, User-Government, User-Consumer, or General Interest.

The new Chair of the SCC is Bruce Carney, Owner of American Pools & Spas in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. He served as SCC’s Vice Chair for nearly two years and has worked in the pool industry for more than 50 years, with experience in pool design, construction, renovation, maintenance, and management. He has contributed to many industry publications, including PHTA/ANSI standards and training manuals for PHTA, the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF), the American Red Cross, and the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The SCC’s four new Voting Members are:

  • Amrit Singh Gill, User-Consumer

  • Ashley Hofferber McKay, User-Consumer

She attended Texas Woman’s University.

“It has been an honor to work with PHTA staff and members of the SCC these past few years, first as the Vice Chair and now as the Chair. To have so much expertise and experience in one group is truly amazing, and adding the new members should provide fresh viewpoints to many discussions,” says Carney. “In the next few years, the SCC will be responsible for approving several very important standards. We are also taking on the new concept of ‘continuous maintenance’ on several standards, which will allow quicker updates as changes in information and technology occur. I look forward to the challenges we will have and feel comfortable that we will be a big part of providing a safer experience for all aquatic users.”

For more than 40 years, PHTA has been the leading industry organization recognized by ANSI to develop and promote national consensus standards for residential and public swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas.
