The single greatest challenge for Swimming Pool Contractors (SPC) to expand their business is the lack of competent and accountable construction managers and superintendents. Although being an engineer, a skilled craftsman, or having pool industry experience is helpful, it is certainly not a prerequisite to becoming a quality superintendent. The likely candidate is trained! In this course, we will explore what makes a good construction superintendent, and how they are an integral part of running a profitable business that provides quality work in a timely period with a reasonable (or greater!) client satisfaction of the product result.

Learning Objectives:

  • Defining the need for a functional organization structure whether the organization is a one-person operation or a team of many
  • Learning and understanding why establishing policies and procedures will make the organization more reliable, more manageable, and consistently successful
  • Providing insight and training for basic managerial functions, making you more effective in a managing supervisor role
  • Identifying the subfunctions performed by the construction management team and why they are essential to the operational success of the organization
  • Providing guidelines for the superintendent and field oversight to ensure accountability and product quality
  • Introducing guidelines to establish a job opening procedure for launching a project in a predictable and reliable manner
  • Establishing a job closeout procedure to achieve project completion and transfer of ownership responsibility to the client

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of good design and will teach you how to lay out the different improvements in your projects (e.g., pool, spa, patio, etc.). We will break the fundamentals down into two categories: the Elements of Design and the Principles of Design. Once you have a good grasp of the fundamentals, you will learn how to apply them. We will start with short practice exercises and build up to a final project: creating a master plan that includes a pool and spa.

Exclusive for Expo attendees! On the first afternoon of class, we will visit the Nasher Sculpture Center, home to one of the finest collections of modern and contemporary sculptures in the world. We will explore the beautiful outdoor sculpture garden and focus on how the design fundamentals we are learning were used, how those fundamentals affect us when we enter the garden, and how to apply these same techniques in your projects. We will discover how colors and materials can make outdoor spaces look even more amazing; this is a chance to see how creativity can transform outdoor areas into something spectacular.

This is a required course to become a Certified Expert Pool Builder and Design Professional.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss fundamental Elements (e.g., line, color, and form) and Principles (e.g., unity, balance, and scale) of design
  • Define perceptual skills and a better understanding of spatial organization and spatial relationships
  • Use these concepts to design beautiful spaces that connect with the surrounding environment
  • Use your communication skills to accurately portray your design intent to the client

Looking through a magazine of pools, it is easy to find well-conceived plans that failed to unify the design with proper material and color selections. Color is one of our basic means of communication and it influences our emotions, so it must be understood and controlled. Heating pools and spas has become more and more popular with homeowners as leisure time has increased and owners desire longer seasons in which to use their pools. However, heating costs have risen with the cost of fuels, particularly fossil fuels and electricity, and owners would like options.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate each of the heating alternatives in common and not so common use today, heat sources such as fossil fuels (natural gas, LPG), electricity (resistance), heat pumps, solar, geothermal, and common boiler systems with heat exchangers
  • Evaluate first the thermodynamics, that is, the flow of heat both into a pool or spa and the loss of heat through conduction, convection, and radiation
  • Discuss the efficiency ratings and what they mean
  • Identify the impact of evaporation on pool and spa heating and the effectiveness of evaporation and insulating barriers. After evaluating the heat losses, the sizing of units will be discussed for each heat source
  • Discuss the cost of operation including the true cost of fuels, life cycle, and replacement

Not every backyard swimming pool and spa project needs the attention of an engineer but occasionally a builder finds himself over his head with soil foundation issues, cantilevered structures, pier supported pools, deep fills, adjacent structures, complex hydraulics, logistical issues such as remote access, elevated pool structures, and other, more complicated issues. This brief 1-hour seminar takes students through the ins and outs of hiring a consulting engineer to assist with swimming pool and spa design. Items discussed will include the qualifications a pool professional should look for in an engineer, the types of engineers and firms that routinely take on swimming pool engagements, fee structures, professional liability insurance, and division of responsibility. And finally, we will discuss training your engineer for your individual type of pool work and building relationships for the long-term.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop for the student a personal criterion for when an engineer is necessary and when one is not
  • Investigate the process of finding and vetting engineering professionals on the basis of their experience and qualifications
  • Prepare builders to discuss contractual arrangements and fees with engineers
  • Enable builders to create a plan for building a relationship with an engineer or firm by cooperative training specifically in the types and locations in which the builder specializes
