Leadership qualities are not really something we are born with. It is a position of trust that we earn through dedication, setting an example, and keeping our word. This is especially true for the aquatics world. While there are plenty of resources out there that will tell you what to do, this webinar is designed to help you identify certain traps to avoid falling into because you have a position of power.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify behaviors which are harmful to team building
  • Understand how these behaviors negatively impact your operation
  • Learn alternative methods to use which will lead to better team building

The forgotten history of pool sanitation is leading to millions of RWI cases every year. Sanitation regiments for U.S. pools began around 1918. Very active programs among the sanitarians of the American Public Health Association from the 1910s through 1964 have provided a huge cache of practical information on how and why swimming pools must be managed to protect the health of swimmers. But absolutely none of that information is present in our current operating manuals – including the Pool & Spa Operator Handbook, which is the world’s most commonly used manual on pool operation. Two examples:

  1. A recent article from the CDC (Gerdes, et al, 2023) identified dermal infections as the leading type of RWIs. Ear infections alone are estimated to cause 5,700,000 cases and cost the public $536,000,000 each year. These easily preventable illnesses dwarf all other RWIs. When were dermal infections first identified as a major concern? 1921! (Simons, et al, 1924, AJPH 14(7)597-602). Yet, these barely get mentioned in the CDC outbreak reports or the CPO Handbook compared to Cryptosporidium and secondary disinfection systems.
  2. OTO methods were deleted from Standards Methods, 14th ed. in 1975 “because of poor accuracy and precision and high overall (average) total error in comparison with other available methods...” Why do we still see references in our talks and trade articles as well as in the MAHC to old studies that used OTO? Has the focus in our training gone so far to HOW to run a pool that we have lost WHY we do each aspect of management?

This talk will examine the forgotten history lessons of pool management that must be included in our future training class. Otherwise, our pools will be condemned to a repeating cycle of easily prevented illness and expense.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how our present pool operations have slowly evolved for the last 100 years
  • Learn that the scientific literature throughout the 20th century has been forgotten and key lessons are not included in our present training materials
  • Understand that proposed operational parameters must be supportable by reliable science, or inadvertent negative consequences can and will result

A cornerstone of the entertainment industry is the ability to provide safe and reliable recreation for all users and this all starts with the single unifying factor: water. Water quality is critical to the success of any aquatic destination and has a direct impact on the health and safety of guests. Pristine water is a function of proper circulation, filtration, disinfection, and oxidations. Without each of these elements, a pool will harbor unsafe levels of bacteria, produce irritating chemical byproducts, or damage equipment and aquatic systems. This session will explore several advanced water treatment engineering solutions and technologies employed to ensure a safe and healthy guest experience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Follow the water path through the pool system, examining the functions of all areas and their effects on water quality
  • Discover the interrelated functions of circulation, filtration, disinfection, and supplemental sanitation related to maintaining water quality and a safe and healthy aquatic environment
  • Evaluate how operations and pool management can contribute to water quality
  • Examine a variety of engineering advancements that help to mitigate risks and improve guest experience

Attendees will be shown how all types and methods of construction can be employed in construction of a natural swimming pool (NSP) and, depending on the "look" the client is wanting to achieve, the NSP can look just like a regular pool or can be designed with the aesthetic look of a pond with flourishing aquatic plants. The business opportunity is bright for pool builders, landscape architects, and designers who embrace an understanding of NSPs. With more clients seeking environmentally sustainable options to support their green-living lifestyle, NSPs provide a means to address the outdoor living spaces needs of this expanding demographic. Attendees will be provided information to assist in estimating NSP projects and the costs associated with building different sizes and types of NSPs. Bottom line, a professionally designed and properly equipped NSP will cost slightly more to install than a chemically treated pool of the same size, but the value these environments create is immeasurable. This course will provide the attendees with the information YOU need to know for planning and integrating a natural swimming pond or natural swimming pool into their clients' project.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the History and Functional Components of a Natural Swimming Pool
  • Understand the Flexibility of NSP Design, Engineering, and Construction for Residential and Public / Commercial Pools
  • Acquire Knowledge of the Basis and Optimization of Biological Filtration
  • Become Informed of Microbiological Standards and Historical Safety of NSPs
  • Appreciate the Advantages of Eliminating Use of Chlorine and Associated Chemicals

Not every backyard swimming pool and spa project needs the attention of an engineer, but occasionally a builder finds himself over his head with soil foundation issues, cantilevered structures, pier supported pools, deep fills, adjacent structures, complex hydraulics, logistical issues such as remote access, elevated pool structures, and other, more complicated issues. This brief 1-hour seminar takes students through the ins and outs of hiring a consulting engineer to assist with swimming pool and spa design. Items discussed will include the qualifications a pool professional should look for in an engineer, the types of engineers and firms that routinely take on swimming pool engagements, fee structures, professional liability insurance, and division of responsibility. And finally, we will discuss training your engineer for your individual type of pool work and building relationships for the long-term.

Learning Objectives:

  • To develop for the student a personal criterion for when an engineer is necessary and when one is not
  • To investigate the process of finding and vetting engineering professionals on the basis of their experience and qualifications
  • To prepare builders to discuss contractual arrangements and fees with engineers
  • To enable builders to create a plan for building a relationship with an engineer or firm by cooperative training specifically in the types and locations in which the builder specializes
